But it wasn't just strategic-level games - there were also games like SPI's Grunt and Search & Destroy, which were at the same level as minis games. So it may be that board games are all perceived as less visceral - more like reading a book - than playing minis.

The Generals (boardgamers) always have a different reaction to events than the Captains and Lieutenants (miniatures gamers) have. Strategic board games are less visceral than minis.

I'm not sure if it just the audience or if minis just evoke more of a reaction - back in the 70's when it was considered bad form to do Vietnam minis, there were a number of Vietnam board wargames that did not get the same reaction - and I would say that the board wargame audience has the same general demographics as minis.
