I am unconvinced that we can provide regional stability while Iraq is
undergoing a civil war. There is a school of thought that says our only
option at this point is to choose sides in the civil war and do our
utmost for "our side" to win.
That having been said, aside from just the philosophical problems of
doing that, none of the sides look particularly inviting.
If we withdrew from the civil war in Iraq, effectively we would be allowing
the Shia to win, so they would become "our side."
