Yeah, there are plenty of films I could have added over their nominees.
I'll have to think them through and then pass them along.
I actually thought Shawshank Redemption was a pretty good film, although
maybe not in the top 100.
I would hope that pure popularity wouldn't count for a lot; otherwise the
list could contain a lot of dreck.

The criteria are listed in the ballot. Don't "Attack of the Killer
Tomatoes" and "Reefer Madness" have Cultural Impact? Of course they do;
they should be on the list. Critical Recognition: if People and Us!
Magazines like it, then it's in? It's the only explanation for "The
Shawshank Redemption". Popularity Over Time: how about "A Nightmare on
Elm Street" and "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre?" And does it count if it
happens to be on when one passes out on the couch? Or if there's nothing
else on but Thigh Master Infomercials? Jeez.

I have to admit, it's somewhat bewildering. What happened since 1997 to
make Godfather now better than Casablanca, or vice versa?
Did someone see an earlier cut? Did it turn out Bogey's lines were
dubbed?
Which, of course, leaves out the question of what the basis is for
judging a movie. Admitting my own idiosyncratic tastes, I'm sorry, but
while Citizen Kane is technically an excellent film, it's just not that
much fun to watch (and I saw it on the BIG SCREEN at the Wang Center up
in Boston, when they used to do the great films thing).

The SHAWshank Redemption?! And ranked above Goodfellas and Pulp Fiction.

Ten years ago, the American Film Institute rated the top 100 American
movies of all time. This year, they did it again and some of the
results changed. I've also attached the nominees for this year's
contest. It's interesting because it includes some films that you
wouldn't consider to be "classics" (e.g., Terminator 2 (but not
Terminator 1)).
